Sutton Runners Handicap

From May to August, Sutton Runners organises a series of four free handicap races in Nonsuch Park on the third Thursday evening of each month.

Each runner is given a handicap based on a recent parkrun time. This way everyone competes on a level playing field – regardless of how fast they are. The course is a 5k route around Nonsuch Park and no watches may be worn! Points are awarded for every handicap race a runner completes, and a trophy is presented to the overall winner at the club’s AGM.

The meeting park is near the Cheam Gate entrance in Nonsuch Park. We meet at 7.00 pm for a 7.15 pm start. There’s no need to pre-register. You can just turn up and run.

Scoring

Here’s how the scoring system works:
Your base time (handicap) is calculated using two of your most recent parkrun times. Naturally, the time has to reflect your natural ability, so parkruns where you’ve acted as a pacer or run with slower runners or children will be omitted.

For every handicap you complete, you score 10 points. If you run your base time you will be awarded 60 points. You will receive 1 point for every second quicker than your base time you run. For every second slower than your base time, 1 point will be subtracted. The maximum points you can score at each handicap race is 120. After all four races, your best three times will count towards your final score.

If you don’t have any recent results we can calculate a base time with, you will be awarded 15 points at the first race and your time will be used as your handicap for the next event.
Your base time is updated after every race.
