A bit strange this bank holiday weekend not having the Sutton Runners 10Km event happening. Our esteemed Club Chairman
Graham took advantage of the free date and is certainly going through a purple (or should I say gold) patch at the moment; on Sunday at the Ranelagh Richmond Half Marathon he finished in 59th position overall. He achieved gold club standard award in the Male Vet 50 category as he smashed the 90 minutes barrier… Tim Mc, in the same category, must be getting worried! Aeron Smith also had a great run finishing in 1hr 43m 02s. They were joined by a rapidly improving Clare who beat the 2 hours mark easily after dipping under 1hr 58m.

At the local Dave Denton 5km event at Nonsuch park on Thursday 3rd May we had a lower turnout than usual
from Sutton Runners than in previous years but still Kevin Lusignea finished an excellent 2nd place out of 71 runners.
Kevin was just behind the winner from Sutton & District, and 2nd claim Sutton Runner Alex Penfold. First female back
from Sutton Runners was Leah Philbrick in 22m 40s. Well done all. As an aside please note this particular race results will not be considered for club achievement awards results as it is believed to be a slightly short course.

On Wednesday 2nd May Jonathan Pegg ran his way in the “Your Way” 5km event when finishing in 28m 12s.

At the parkruns we had people participating in the Sheffield, Dulwich, Banstead, Nonsuch and Riddlesdown Events. Only one person, Kathryn Chisholm in 23m 26s managed a parkrun personal best this week. Congrats Katherine!

Sutton Runners turned out in force early Saturday morning at Nonsuch Park. Even though it was drizzling over 20 people volunteered to help organise the parkrun and everyone had a smile on their face. After some slightly complex gazebo erection the Sutton Runners black and yellow stand was looking very professional, and the team were ready to hand out flyers and tell the local runners all about our club.

The London Marathon the previous week had inspired more people to run at Nonsuch this week, but the rain had also put a few people off. They ended up with 199 runners, which matches the most runners to complete the course. A bit of sunshine next Saturday and Race Director Dave reckons they’ll be able to break the 200 runners mark.

Pretty in Pink

After the warm up, the Race Director got the runners in place for a race briefing, then Avi took the stand and loudhailer and told the runners about our club and the 10K; a little prompting from Anita ensured he remembered all his lines. Then they were off…following Rob Pinchbeck on his bike leading the way. Kevin, Martin, Chris, Philip, Colin, Tony and Tunde were the pacers looking resplendent in their bright pink high-vis vests, which I think they secretly enjoyed wearing.

The course was slightly slower than usual due to the non-stop rain from previous days making the grassy section of the course a bit muddy. But the runners powered on and 31 still managed to achieve their PB’s. The race was won by 15 year old Max Caulfield with a time of 18.14, cheered home by his proud mum and gran; I tried to persuade him to join SR, but he already belonged to Epsom and Ewell Harriers, along with his mum and gran, and couldn’t be swayed. Max was closely followed by Chris Coles (18.18) and Martin Harris (18.23).

The first female across the line was Lisa Harris (21.02), followed by Charlotte Carter (21.40) and Amaya Jones (21.49) in second and third for the women.

A number of Sutton Runners ran the course with Kevin Lewis (18.31) and Kevin Lusignea (18.51) coming fourth and fifth, well done boys! Also Sue McIntyre, Martin Newton, Chris Catt, David McGranaghan, Johnathan Pegg, Angela Hussey, Dean Klesser, Therese Panetta, Wendy Ballard, Patricia Cue and Sandra O’Reilly took part in the race. It was really interesting finding out what makes runners of all standards join the parkrun each week, from whole families running together to getting fit for Sandhurst Army Officer selection and bride to be Julie getting in shape for her wedding.

A very successful day, for the runners and as a great way to advertise our club, definitely worth doing again in the future. If you didn’t get a chance to help out at this one, then do volunteer to help at future parkruns we organise; it’s great for the club and a great way to get to know your fellow Sutton Runners, oh and the homemade cakes are an added bonus!

More photos of the days event can be found here

15 Sutton Runners took to the streets of London in Sunday’s Marathon to join over 37,500 runners. The sun came out at the start of the race and it stayed sunny throughout; great weather for the spectators and a mixed response from the runners.

Runners competing included Neil McAlpine, Darran Ford, Graham Miller, Charles Green, Tim McIntyre, Chris Catt, Andrea Francis, Gina Burbidge, Mark Aldred, Penny Wilkins, John James, Darrin Ormston, Jim Mundy, Donna Richards and Leela Mahamdallie. Martin Giles got injured the week before the race so was unable to take part. Even though he was gutted at not being able to run he attended the marathon to cheer on the runners with a number of other members of the club.

The first Sutton Runner through the finish line was Neil McAlpine in 3:00:05 and Darran Ford not far behind with 3:06:46; first female for SR was Andrea Francis with 3:39:18 with Gina Burbridge close on her tails with 3:40:41. Penny Wilkins was 152nd in her category with a time of 4:04:44. Sutton Runner silver awards go to Neil, Darran, Graham, Charles, Tim, Andrea, Gina and Penny, with a Bronze award to Chris. Full results can be found on our results page.

Well done everyone, running 26.2miles is an achievement to be proud of!

Sutton Runners Take over the Nonsuch Park Run

Remember that this Saturday 28th April we are hosting the parkrun at Nonsuch. Do support the event by helping out or running in it. It’s a great way to encourage people to join our club and to promote our 10K on 13th May.

It will be a fun event and we would love to see you there. We plan to start at 11.00am, clear up some litter then make use of the outdoor gym for some core fitness work. There is also an outdoor fitness trail you can have a go on and we will follow this with a run around the park. The adjacent Morden Pools have agreed that we can use their showers free of charge to freshen up afterwards. Equipment and some refreshments will be provided. You will also be given a goody bag to say thank you.

Morden Park is beside the London Road (A24) Morden. Parking is available behind Merton College, the nearest rail station is Morden South and plenty of buses pass the park (154, 93, 80, 293).

If you are able to join us please let me know, if you can only make it for part of the day that is fine. The event will be filmed so this is your chance to have fun and grab some of the limelight (if you want to).

Information about the TRAIL Campaign can be found on http://www.edandphil.co.uk/litter_22.html

What a year for sports fans with the arrival of the worlds greatest sporting event and our own London marathon which always lives up to its reputation as one of the worlds premier marathons. At Chris McFaddens sports injuries clinic we are supporting this event with a special offer to all runners. The usual 1 hour treatment costing £39 will be reduced to £30 for the first treatment throughout April. Also on site on Wednesdays we will have an ex marathon runner and current UKA coach on hand to give complimentary advice if required. Thank you for taking the time to read this and please look the clinic up on its website: www.cmsportstherapist.co.uk

Sutton Runners had a busy and varied weekend in their running. The big event for us was the club’s participation in the National Cross Country 12Km eventheld at Parliament Fields over a tough course as you would expect. This is arguably the best cross country event of the entire winter calendar. The atmosphere is brilliant throughout the day. Sutton Runners finished 77th team out of 125 teams which was a very good achievement for us. First back for us was Martin Giles in a time of 45m 24s.

We also had participants at a heartbreaker marathon, a Tunbridge Wells half marathon and eight different 5km parkruns. At the nonsuch parkrun, Andrew Nippard finished 2nd overall while his wife to be (as of next week), Elinor Caborn finished in 29th place.
